How to Open a STEP File
Someone sent you a .step file (or .stp — same thing) and double-clicking it did nothing. That is normal: a STEP file holds a 3D solid model, and most computers ship with no app that previews one. The fastest way to open it is to drag it into a browser viewer — no install, no account, free. Here are your options, easiest first.
.step and .stp are the same file
Before anything else: .step and .stp are the exact same format. The .stp spelling exists only because old Windows software limited file extensions to three letters. Both open the same way, in the same tools — if a tool opens one, it opens the other. (Curious what is actually inside? See what is a STEP file.)
Option 1: open it free in your browser (fastest)
You do not need to install CAD software just to look at a part. A browser-based viewer loads the STEP file and lets you orbit, zoom, and inspect it in seconds. With PartWork.ai you upload the file, view it in 3D, and measure it — on desktop or phone, with no account required to view.
Open the studio
Go to studio.partwork.ai in any modern browser.
Upload your .step / .stp file
Drop the file in or pick it from your computer. It loads as a 3D model you can rotate and zoom.
Inspect — or convert
Orbit and view it free. When you want a copy in another format (STL for printing, for example), sign up free to download.
This is the no-friction path: viewing is free and needs no account, so you can confirm you have the right part before doing anything else. See importing files for the supported formats.
Option 2: open it in CAD software
If you want to edit the model, open it in a CAD program. Because STEP is a neutral, vendor-neutral format, nearly every CAD package imports it — Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Onshape, FreeCAD, Inventor, and others all open .step / .stp directly via File → Open or Import. The trade-off is that these are heavy installs (or paid seats) and have a real learning curve, which is overkill if you only need to look at the part or hand it to a shop.
Option 3: convert it to another format
Often the reason you want to “open” a STEP file is to turn it into something else — an STL to 3D print, or a 3MF for a modern slicer. You do not need to learn CAD for that: upload the STEP, view it, and export the format you need. Full walkthrough in 3D CAD file conversion tools, and the format trade-offs in STL vs STEP.
Which option should I pick?
Just need to see it or send it on? Use the browser viewer (Option 1). Need to change the geometry? Use CAD (Option 2). Need a printable file? Convert it (Option 3) — no CAD skills required.
Open your STEP file now
Drop a .step or .stp file into PartWork.ai and see it in 3D in seconds — then export it, or describe a change and let the AI build a new version. See importing and exporting files.
Free to upload & view — sign up to download
Open the studio, upload your STEP file, and view it in 3D free. Sign up (free) to download or convert it; credits to generate a new part — 100 for $4.99 (~5¢ each).
